Google Business Profile in 2026: New Review Rules and AI Features
Google tightened its review policies in April 2026 and added more AI to Business Profiles. What changed, what's now risky, and how local businesses in Gujarat can get more genuine reviews.

Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a customer sees: before your website, before your shop. In 2026 Google changed how reviews are policed and added more AI to how profiles are shown. Here's what local businesses need to know.
Stricter review rules from April 2026
In mid-April 2026 Google updated its Business Profile review policies. Industry coverage highlighted that these practices are now clearly treated as violations:
- Incentivised reviews: offering discounts, gifts or freebies in exchange for a review
- Review gating: asking only happy customers to review, or screening people first
- Pressure in store: standing over customers while they write a review
- Staff quotas: setting review targets that push employees to collect them unfairly
- Directing content: telling customers what to write or which keywords to use
Google has said it blocked or removed hundreds of millions of policy-breaking reviews in 2025, and penalties can include removed reviews, warnings on your profile or limits on new reviews. The details vary between reports, so check Google's own policy pages, but the direction is clear: only genuine reviews, written freely in the customer's own words, are safe.
More AI on your profile
- AI review summaries are now shown more prominently on many profiles, so the overall tone of your reviews matters, not just the star average.
- Suggested replies: Google has been testing AI-drafted responses to reviews. Always edit them so they sound like you.
- AI answers to questions: customer questions are increasingly answered with AI using your profile, website and reviews, so your information needs to be accurate.
How to get more genuine reviews
- Ask every customer, the same way. A simple message after the job: "Thanks for choosing us — if you have a minute, a Google review helps us a lot."
- Make it easy. Share your review link on WhatsApp, on your invoice and on a small QR card at the counter.
- Reply to every review. Thank people by name, and answer complaints calmly with a way to fix the problem.
- Never offer rewards for reviews, and never ask for 5 stars specifically.
Keep your profile and website in sync
AI answers combine your profile with your website. Make sure your business name, phone, address and hours match everywhere, and give each service a clear page on your site. Our local SEO guide for AI search covers this in more detail.
